Distinguishing Characteristics

A large banana shaped casque that is perched atop the bill (and whose function is debatable) is the most distinguishing feature of the rhino hornbill.

Behavior/Adaptations

* The nesting habits of Bucerotidae are interesting in that the incubating female is sealed inside of a tree hole with mud while the male provides food through a small hole in the mud.

Status

The rhino hornbill is under no imminent threat but habitat alteration could harm populations in the future.
