Internship Program

Thank you for your interest in an internship with Nashville Zoo at Grassmere. The internship program at Nashville Zoo is an opportunity for college students to acquire experience and knowledge by working alongside our professional staff.

Although these are non-paid internships, the experience will no doubt benefit any future endeavors you may have in the zoological field or related area of interest. Internships are available to college students in animal care, education, administration and special events.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an academic institution
  • Must be 16 years or older
  • Dependable transportation

Time Commitment

There are three levels for individuals currently enrolled in high school or college. Non-credit internship applications are accepted.

Level One Level Two Level Three

  • 20-40 Hours/Week
  • Minimum of 3 Months
  • Non-college Credit
  • College Credit/No Project
  • 8-20 Hours/Week
  • Minimum 6 Weeks
  • High School
  • Service Credit/No Project
  • Minimum 50 Total Hours

Applying for an Internship

Please mail, fax or email the following information together to apply for an internship. Incomplete application packets will not be considered for an internship. Letters of recommendation may be mailed or faxed separately.

  • Two Letters of Recommendation (one letter must be written by a representative of the academic institution in which you are currently enrolled)

Upon receiving the completed application, selected students will be contacted to schedule an interview. Efforts are made to place students in their area of interest.

Tuberculin (TB) Skin Test

All interns assigned to an animal care area are required to submit a current (within past 12 months) TB skin test prior to interning.

Uniform

All interns are required to follow Nashville Zoo appearance policy. Nashville Zoo supplies interns with T-Shirt and nametag. Interns are responsible for purchasing khaki pants/shorts and closed-toe shoes. Interns have the option of purchasing additional uniform items at their own expense.
